The organic farming method
 
This farming method has a double aim: to generate a product free from the pollution caused by chemical products, and to create as little "impact on the environment" as possible, therefore respecting man and his health, as well as the environment. It is a set of sophisticated techniques within which the actions of man interact with living organisms and the environment in which they live. It is not then, like often considered, a simple substitution of chemical synthesis products with acceptable natural ones. It is the attempt to reconstruct the biological and cultural equilibrium which farming has always guarded.

The methods to perform this type of farming follow that which is stated by the CE 834/07 889/08 rules, which must be turned to in order to obtain some legal reference.
According to these norms, the obligations and principles to which a biological production company must abide by are:
- apply the rules to a plot of land for a conversion period of at least two years
- respect the balance between plants, insects, mushrooms, animals, man and environment
- maintain or increase the fertility of the soil's biological activity
- sustain a defense (not a fight) against the diseases and parasites which affect plants as well as weeds, based on: *choice of adequate and varied species *protection of the parasites that guarantee a balance between harmful species and non-harmful ones * the use, only when necessary, of products of "natural" origin listed in the regulations for control and balance of the above mentioned species.


Also in this case then, there is a constant control on our part and, depending on seasonal patterns, a continuous support of the plants. It is actually necessary to mention that fungicides as well as dithiocarbamates can hinder the propagation of useful insect species.

A Company that cultivates organic produce, and, that wishes to label its products accordingly in order to sell them as such, must be controlled by one of the designated organizations recognized by the Department of Agriculture. It will have to maintain accurate records available to the relevant authorities of the purchases, loading and unloading of plant protection products, and other products used by the company. It will also have to have registers of the purchase and sale of all products, as well as a ledger where all farming activity is recorded, including dates and plant protection products used. In addition, it will have to allow access, at any given moment, to the assigned control personnel and permit any necessary samples to be collected in order to perform the tests.




Organic agriculture does not aim to eliminate the cultivation methods and to simplify the subdivision of the various sectors that converge in agricultural activity, but tends to look at the complexity of all the relevant aspects.
It is necessary to manage the natural resources, not force them, and reach a balance made up of coexistence


The consequences "on the field" of such norms in a single-crop system, lead to the absolute necessity of supporting the formation of a balanced eco-system. For insects, this depends on a regular control of the various species and the consideration of what may be the highest level of tolerance at which to intervene, with the natural methods available to us, and contain the propagation of such species. As for fungus and diseases of the sort, all acceptable treatments are of a preventive nature, and these too aim to create an environment in which vegetation will be protected from being affected.









If these procedures are followed and no discrepancies are found, the company will be provided, on an annual basis, with a certificate which confirms the above mentioned information, and with authorization to print labels which state that the product was grown organically.
